The Jamaican Government has initiated the distribution of relief funds to residents affected by Hurricane Beryl. Prime Minister Andrew Holness stressed the need for rapid and compassionate aid delivery during a ceremony at the Ministry of Labour and Social Security. The relief package includes $400,000 for total loss, $150,000 for severe damage, and $50,000 for minor damage, sourced entirely from government funds.
Holness highlighted the efficiency of this response compared to the delayed aid after Hurricane Ivan in 2004. This swift action is attributed to improved fiscal management and pre-financed disaster risk resources, totaling approximately $10.9 billion. Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke outlined the financing structure, including $5 billion allocated for immediate disbursement and additional support from international donors and multilateral partners.
Opposition Spokesman on Finance Julian Robinson acknowledged the economic setbacks due to Hurricane Beryl, emphasizing the need for reallocation of funds to cover the estimated $45 billion in damage. The government prioritizes education, ensuring schools reopen on schedule. This relief effort marks a significant shift from past reliance on external grants, showcasing Jamaica’s enhanced disaster preparedness and fiscal resilience.
