A tragic motor vehicle accident occurred along the North Coast Highway in Trelawny yesterday, resulting in the deaths of four individuals. The victims have been identified as:
– Anthony Walters, 19, from Alexandria, St Ann
– Jody Levy, 39, from Brown’s Town, St Ann
– Sabrina Downie, 32, from Discovery Bay
– Marlon Lyons, the 41-year-old taxi driver from Braco in Trelawny
Incident Details
The incident happened around 8 a.m. when Marlon Lyons was driving a Toyota Probox towards St James. The car collided with the back of a truck, leading to severe injuries for all seven occupants. They were immediately rushed to the hospital, where four were pronounced dead.
Overcrowding and Speeding
Superintendent Winston Milton, Head of the Trelawny police, pointed out that the Toyota Probox was licensed to carry only five passengers but was carrying seven at the time of the crash. He also highlighted that the car was traveling at a high speed, as evidenced by its mangled condition.
Milton urged motorists to adhere to speed limits to prevent such tragedies.
Road Fatalities Statistics
This incident has raised the total number of road fatalities in Trelawny to 22 since the beginning of the year. As of July 31, Jamaica has recorded 222 road fatalities. The Island Traffic Authority attributes the main causes of these accidents to speeding, failure to stay in the proper lane, and pedestrians walking or standing in the roadway. Road crashes are projected to reach 412 by the end of the year, compared to 425 road deaths last year.
